چکیده

Heavy metal pollution of soil is becoming one of the most severe environmental hazards and has received great attention in the last few years because of its negative impact on human health and agriculture. Economically, excessive accumulation of heavy metals is most toxic to crop plants and results in decreased soil microbial activity, soil fertility and yield losses (McGrath et al., 1995). Various lines of data (Guo et al.; 1996,Mclaughlin et al.; 1999; Sanita et al., 1999; Chen et al., 2003;) indicate that accumulation of heavy metal also threaten human health through the food chain. Although Nickel (Ni) in general is known as an essential micronutrient and components of some plant enzymes (Eskew et al.,1983; Andreeva et al., 2001) but it is highly phytotoxic when present in excessive concentrations. It has been reported that Ni toxicity is correlated with growth inhibition, changes in chloroplast and chlorophyll ISSN: 2319-7706 Volume 4 Number 1 (2015) pp. 765-772 http://www.ijcmas.com

Earthquake induced Deterministic Damage and Economic Loss Estimation for Kolkata, India

The city of Kolkata, the State Capital of West Bengal is jolted by earthquakes time and again from the tectonic regimes of the Central Himalaya, highly seismogenic Northeast India and the active tectonics of Bengal Basin which is a pericratonic tertiary basin on which the City is located. Earthquake disaster mitigation and management necessitates seismic hazard assessment for the generation of ...

Selenium assimilation and volatilization from selenocyanate-treated Indian mustard and muskgrass.

Selenocyanate (SeCN(-)) is a major contaminant in the effluents from some oil refineries, power plants, and in mine drainage water. In this study, we determined the potential of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) and muskgrass (a macroalga, Chara canescens) for SeCN(-) phytoremediation in upland and wetland situations, respectively. The tolerance of Indian mustard to toxic levels of SeCN(-) was s...

Enhanced Accumulation of Copper and Lead in Amaranth (Amaranthus paniculatus), Indian Mustard (Brassica juncea) and Sunflower (Helianthus annuus)

BACKGROUND Soil contamination by copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) is a widespread environmental problem. For phytoextraction to be successful and viable in environmental remediation, strategies that can improve plant uptake must be identified. In the present study we investigated the use of nitrogen (N) fertilizer as an efficient way to enhance accumulation of Cu and Pb from contaminated industrial so...

Heavy metal toxicity: Effect on plant growth, biochemical parameters and metal accumulation by Brassica juncea L.

Plant growth, pigment concentration, biochemical parameters and uptake of heavy metals were determined for Brassica juncea L. in response to cadmium and lead stress. The plant exhibited a decline in growth, chlorophyll content and carotenoids with Cd and Pb but Cd was found to be more detrimental than Pb treatment in B. juncea. The protein content was decreased by Cd (900 μM) to 95% and 44% by ...

Evaluating trap crops for diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae).

Potential trap crops for the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), were evaluated through a series of ovipositional preference and larval survival experiments in outdoor screenhouses in 2002 and 2003. Hosts examined as trap crops were glossy and waxy collards, Brassica oleracea L. variety acephala; Indian mustard, Brassica juncea (L.) Czern; and yellow rocket, B...
